The following survey of Internet Software Consortium shows the position of America based on the number of internet hosts.

IPv6 has been in development since the early 1990’s, and it has now reached the stage where the core specifications have been finalized for vendor implementations. With initial trial deployments happening around the world, NorthInternet Router America also has IPv6 deployment experience. When compared to the position of America based on the number of internet hosts, IPv6 still has to take strong hold within North America.

According to American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN) for North America region, the IPv6 address requests and allocations have been constant for the months of August and September 2007. Although, IPv6 transfer rates have been decreasing, they have not yet reached saturation.

Several test beds and early adopters have increased. The commercial IPv6 premium service in North America has been started by the ISP, NTT/Verio.

There are three types of IPv6 deployments happening in North America.

  • Smooth Transition – It enables IPv6 at system renovation time with no additional cost involved.
  • Forced Deployment – It is mandated by the Federal Government for IPv6 deployment in government networks by the end of FY2008.
  • Solution-Oriented Deployment – It is introduced as a solution in terms of cost, speed, extendibility, flexibility, and longevity.

2008 Government Deadline – OMB Mandate

In 2005, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) issued a memorandum that specifies activities and time frames for federal agencies with regard to IPv6 transition. It mandates federal agencies to configure their network backbones to carry IPv6 traffic by June 2008.

GAO is responsible for determining the status of federal agencies’ efforts for transition to IPv6. It also looks into the emerging applications planned for taking the advantage of IPv6 features and the challenges faced by government agencies during transition to IPv6.

OMB has assigned the CIO Council’s Architecture and Infrastructure Committee to provide IPv6 transition guidance for all federal agencies. The Committee offers guidance and other information to agencies through the agency leads and the Council’s Web site. OMB has also formed the IPv6 Working Group which has IPv6 lead personnel for all federal agencies and subject matter experts. IPv6 Working Group organizes seminars on functional areas in IPv6 transition, including standards, testing, and training.

The Status of DOD activities are given below.

  • Department of Defense (DOD) has initiated the process of developing applications that use IPv6 features for enhancing war-fighting capabilities.
  • Work on improving interoperability among many information and weapons systems, known as the Global Information Grid (GIG) has started. The IPv6 component of GIG is aimed at facilitating DOD’s goal of achieving network-centric operations through IPv6.
  • DOD reconstitutes its address space architecture so that it can respond well in future proliferation of numerous unmanned sensors.
  • GIG components are planned to provide the tracking movements of military vehicles and individual soldiers in real time.
  • DOD is also developing applications based on IPv6’s improved quality of service to enhance Voice over IP (VOIP) in an IP based network.
Major IPv6 Projects

Moonv6 Project – It is an international collaborative project led by the North American IPv6 Task Force (NAv6TF). Its aim is to execute deployment testing of IPv6 technology and includes the University of New Hampshire Interoperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL), U.S. Government agencies, and Internet2 (I2). The Moonv6 network is based at the UNH-IOL and the Joint Interoperability Test Command (JITC) is located at Ft. Huachuca, AZ. By rapidly deploying the most aggressive multi-vendor IPv6 network to date, Moonv6 project has played a key role in IPv6 technology adoption process. In future, Moonv6 will create a virtual internet backbone by providing pre-production testing for services of security, roaming devices, etc.

SHIM6 Project – It is a multi-homing solution in IPv6 with a network layer approach to the split of locator/identifier of an IP address.

MetroNet6 – It is a project initiated by the North American and California IPv6 Task Forces in an effort to use voice, video, graphics, intelligence, medical, and other forms of data through multimedia communications for first responders. A prototype is built in the State of California beginning in Sacramento, with communications city-to-city with Palo Alto. It also includes state-to-state MetroNet6 network communications.


With IPv6 gradually taking internet, its research all over the world has rapidly increased. Research on implementing IPv6 in both private and public networks has been initiated by various organizations, task forces, and agencies. There are thousands of research projects on IPv6 undertaken to maximize the advantage of using IPv6 features. The following graph shows the major worldwide activities on IPv6.
